FASHION TIPS FOR WOMEN
10 Fashion Tips
Every shopper would like to know how to make the best decisions when it comes to fashion. The following section contains 10 tips every woman should know before buying new wardrobe items.Top 10 Fashion Tips for Women
- Focus on strengths
- Quality versus quantity
- Create a personal look
- Try new things
- Simplicity is best
- Don't break the bank
- Take note of fashion trends
- Accessories make the outfit
- Tailor an outfit
- Implement the basics
1. Focus on Strengths
Shoppers need to know the ABCs of fashion: Accentuate, Balance, and Camouflage. Shoppers should also look for styles that accentuate their body's strengths and downplay their weaknesses. For example, shoppers who have an hourglass figure should wear clothing that accentuates those attributes, including scooped or V neck outfits, vertical striped outfits, or dresses and one-piece outfits that cinch at the waist. For tall women, for instance, avoid stripes, which make a wearer look even taller. To create volume, add colors and patterns to pants or skirt. This accentuates a triangle shape.2. Quality Versus Quantity
Always buy fashion pieces with quality in mind. A few really good pieces will do a shopper better than numerous items that might not have as much of an impact. Another strategy: Buy a few pieces that shoppers look fabulous in and then augment those classics with more trendy items over time.Quality does not always mean high cost. Buying well-made brands that fit into the shopper's look and plays to their strengths can ensure each purchase is justified.
3. Create a "Personal" Look
Look for clothing designs, certain cuts, and styles that look the best and offer superior comfort. Buy more than one if something is found that works. For example, if a shopper finds a pair of jeans that accentuate her glamorous attributes, she should consider buying multiple pairs in more than one color. The best way to make a powerful and lasting impression through fashion includes developing a fashion style that others won't forget.
4. Try New Things
While sticking to what works best, shoppers should also try new fashions out. This doesn't mean abandoning what has worked for shoppers. One way to experiment with new fashions and still save money is to buy pre-worn clothing that remains in great condition.5. Simplicity Is Best
Staying simple is usually the best way to go. This goes for both makeup and wardrobe items. When in doubt, keep the accessories to a minimum and use timeless, classic fashion styles, such as a black dress with red pumps. When wearing makeup, shoppers should use only enough to highlight the best features of their face: cheekbones, lips, or eyes, for example.6. Don't Break the Bank
Shoppers don't have to buy the most expensive items to be fashionable. Less expensive items can work just as well, especially if they play toward a shopper's strengths. So, instead of buying an expensive Versace dress, shoppers could instead buy a less expensive Banana Republic dress.Used items of fashion are also an option, especially lightly used clothing. This way shoppers can get the items they want in almost-perfect condition at a much lower price point compared to new items.
7. Take Note of Fashion Trends
Shoppers should keep their eyes on the latest fashion trends. That said, shoppers should only adopt those styles that match their body type and personality. If the latest fashions do not look good on a shopper and accentuate their strong points, it doesn't matter if those fashions are in style or not.Read magazines such as Allure, ELLE, and Fashion Magazine to keep up on the latest styles. This allows shoppers to keep up with the latest fashion news and trends, especially in regard to upcoming seasonal options.
8. Accessories Make the Outfit
Shoes and other accessories can make or break an outfit. A perfect belt or piece of jewelry can really tie an outfit together and make a statement. Another important tip: Do not overdo the accessories. As stated above, shoppers should keep their outfits simple. This goes double for makeup, as too much looks gaudy and draws too much attention away from the entire ensemble.Mix and match accessories between outfits. Also, neutral colors and blacks and browns are best to extend the use of accessories between outfits.
9. Tailor an Outfit
If shoppers can afford it, they should have their outfits properly tailored to fit their body. Wearing clothes that look custom made is a first step towards taking a standard look from plain to fashionable. Another way to assure a good fit: Go for a fitting.10. Implement the Basics
The basic wardrobe items every woman should own include a black dress, a blazer, a pair of great-fitting denim jeans, a classic pump, a neutral handbag (black, brown, or both), a leather jacket, and a ballet flat. With just these few articles of clothing and accessories, shoppers can come up with a fashionable ensemble on the spur of the moment.Neutral colors, blacks, and browns are best for establishing a basic fashion wardrobe. Throw in some whites, such as a blouse or pumps, and shoppers are set.

MATERNITY CLOTHES
Maternity Clothes: The Do's and Don'ts of Dressing
Your (Growing) Bump
By Patty Adams Martinez
I remember vividly the day my
favorite jeans stopped buttoning when I was about six or seven months pregnant.
I even teared up (thanks hormones!). My response may have been overly dramatic,
but a good fit, nice color, and pretty silhouette go a long way to making you
feel like a million bucks.
When you're pregnant, dressing can
be a major fashion challenge even for the trendiest mom-to-be because your body
is always changing, and you don't know which clothes in your closet are going
to fit from day to day. Suddenly, you're dressing this body that seems
totally foreign to you, and you have no idea what's going to look good on it.
Olivia Capone Myers, Design Director for A Pea in the Pod, to the rescue!
Olivia's pregnant herself, and due in about two weeks. So not only is she a
fashion expert, but she knows firsthand how to flatter a woman's new curves.
Here are her six tips to dressing—and feeling—like the goddess you are.
DON'T MAKE YOUR OVERSIZED SWEATS YOUR GO-TO OUTFIT."When you're pregnant, being comfortable is key," says
Olivia. "I see so many women wear their sweatpants everywhere, or even
worse, their husband's clothes, because they fit and they're comfortable. There
are so many other alternatives! Leggings, jeans, dresses!
Jersey knits are the best."

DO
EMBRACE YOUR BUMP.
"Sometimes women think that if
they wear bigger clothes—like buying a size or two up in a regular
[non-maternity] dress—they will be able to hide their bump," says Olivia.
"Instead, the stomach may fit, but everything else is baggy and it just
makes you look larger. You're better off buying a maternity dress that fits you
everywhere—like this Isabella Oliver Vivian Print T-Shirt
Dress—and that accentuates your tummy, and still shows off all of your best
assets."
LAYERING DOESN'T MAKE YOU LOOK LARGER—IF DONE THE RIGHT WAY. "Scoop, boat and V-neck tops
are all a good choice for pregnant women, because they help frame your
face," says Olivia. "I live in camisoles that I can throw something
over." The only rule: watch your proportions. A long tunic with skinny
jeans will help elongate you.
DO INVEST IN A GOOD PAIR OF JEANS. "If you only splurge on one item, make it a pair of
designer jeans that make you feel fantastic," says Olivia. "Jeans,
like these 7 for All Mankind Secret
Fit Belly 5-pocket jeans, can be dressed up and down, so you can wear them just
about anywhere."

DO WEAR PATTERNS AND STRIPES. "Women worry that they can't wear patterns or
horizontal stripes anytime—especially when they're pregnant," says
Olivia. "But as long as you have an all-over print without a lot of
negative space, or you have a simple stripe, they really
flatter a pregnant woman's body."
DON'T BE AFRAID OF COLOR."The
instinct for pregnant women is to dress in dark colors, like navy or black,
because they think it makes them look slimmer," says Olivia. "But
color actually really flatters your body, especially if you have ruching
details around your stomach," like in this Isabella Oliver sleeveless maternity dress.

RIGHT NECKLACE FOR YOUR NECKLINE
The Right Necklace For
Your Neckline
a visual guide to necklines
Finding the right necklace to wear
with your gown can sometimes be a little daunting.
Often so much energy goes into
designing or choosing the perfect gown for your special occasion, that
your accessories can get forgotten about. But your special occasion
deserves extra special jewellery.
Jewellery has become the focal point
for wedding and formal occasions, as designers are leaning toward simpler
gowns, but teaming them with statement jewellery.
Contemporary jewellery is exploding
onto the scene. Don’t be afraid to express yourself through your special
piece!
Here are a few tips to help you in
choosing the right necklace for your neckline.
Strapless
All styles of jewellery will
complement a strapless gown – however, just be aware that a strapless gown
exposes a lot of skin & can call attention to your bust if you have a
larger chest.
Necklace styles to consider:
*a choker in small, translucent
glass beads, crystals & gems:
*an elaborate drop necklace to
complement your gown;
Statement Design:
*a black onyx choker for a sleek
contrast to a traditional dress.
Take into consideration the
embellishment that is already on your gown & select jewellery that will
work with it.
Halter & V-neck
The trick with a V-neck gown
is to repeat the shape of your neckline & draw attention to your
cleavage.
This makes it perfect for showing
off your most treasured pendant. Make sure the necklace is the
optimum length – you need for it to finish about 5 centimetres (2 inches) above
the “V”.
Necklace styles to consider:
*a family heirloom;
*a “Y’ drop necklaces in pearl or
crystal;
*a strand of beads or pearls;
*alternatively, if you want a little
sparkle, look for something special in Swarovski crystal.
Statement Design:
*add a tiara – or twine a hair
vine accessory through your tresses – for that extra sparkle!
The designs of the halter
neck gown does not really lend itself to a necklace. If you have
chosen a halter neck look for a fantastic pair of earrings that suit
the style of your occasion.
If you’re able to carry it off,
without feeling self-conscious, you could consider a necklace that falls down
your back – the halter provides the perfect opportunity and frame for such a
piece of jewellery.
Sweetheart
The neckline on a sweetheart
gown is eye-catching all on its own – so be careful not to over-do your
accessories – keep it simple.
Necklace styles to consider:
*a princess length necklace;
*a simple choker;
*a gold or silver chain with a
delicate drop.
Statement Design:
*add a decorative clasp to your
necklace – that way you are still keeping it simple, but added a little
glamour.
Scoop
This neckline is another that will
be complemented by a variety of necklaces.
Necklace styles to consider:
*a dramatic multi-strand necklace in
pearl, gemstone or crystal;
*single or double strands;
*chokers;
*a delicate “Y” necklace;
*a stunning pendant.
Statement Design:
*antique timepieces – think
SteamPunk – are the design element of the moment…
Off-the-Shoulder
Again, a dress which will show a lot
of skin – but which will let you be as simple or dramatic as you want with your
choice of necklace. Just remember…. select jewellery that complements
your fabric and any embellishments on your gown.
Also, you don’t want the necklace to
end too close to the neckline of your dress.
Necklace styles to consider:
*chokers can be very flattering.
Statement Design:
*an elaborate collar necklace that
complements the embellishments on your gown.
Square
The square neckline really
draws attention to your neck.
Necklace styles to consider:
*chokers are particularly stunning –
contemplate a wide, multi-strand choker;
*a dramatic single or double strand
necklace.
Statement Design:
*cameos and lockets are very in
vogue this season.
Bateau
The neckline of a bateau gown
is very high, with the back of the gown being either very high or very low.
The height of the back of your dress
will help determine the right necklace for you.
Necklace styles to consider:
*if you have a high back, consider a
choker. If this necklace style doesn’t look or feel right, opt for
earrings and a bracelet only.
*if you have a low back, consider a
lariat or necklace that falls down your back.
Statement Design:
*try cultured freshwater pearls or
zircon briolettes, that drape down your spine.

RAINY SEASON IS HERE
THE RIGHT WAY TO DRESS THIS RAINY SEASON
There are few things worse than getting caught in the rain without notice. Hopping around in soggy socks, muddy shoes and drenched clothes can put a damper on what should be a bright day.
Although rain can be incredibly challenging to dress for in a country like Nigeria where summer clothing stay in fashion all-year-long, there are tips for getting that simple, smart rainy day look.
Keep it sturdy in dark colours
At this time of the year, wearing white shoes may not be the best choice. To stay clean all day, pair darker coloured pants with shirts or dresses. Go for black, as it will show little signs of debris. Long-sleeved outfits and lightweight sweaters in quick-to-dry materials should also be a frequent choice, especially when living in a city like Lagos where the cloud turns dark at the snap of a finger.
Stay dry in longer jackets
Ever been walking in the rain and seen a car splatter water on everyone using the side walk? Upsetting right? Exactly! While the umbrella can fend some of the rain away, it can’t cover the entire body, so try a jacket for full protection. Since classic trench coats are not popular this side of the Atlantic, a trendy mid-thigh jacket will shield the body just fine.
Wear comfortable boots
Traditional rain boots can look a little awkward on the streets of Nigeria especially as rubber does not breathe as well as other materials such as leather and can leave your feet feeling smelly. However, it helps to stick to covered shoe-styles that are short and sleek to keep the feet out of puddles.
Carry the right accessories
If well selected, accessories can be a lifesaver on a wet day. Trade in soft leather handbags for an all-weather nylon-based satchel, invest in a strong umbrella and tone-down the number of metal jewelry to prevent them from rusting quickly.

PERFECT FASHION ACCESSORIES
Choosing the perfect fashion accessories
Accessories can make or break your look. When choosing fashion
accessories to match your outfit, consider the color, scale and style of
the pieces, and keep the occasion in mind.
Color
When you're wearing black, white or other neutrals, accessories in any color look stylish and coordinated. If you're wearing a colorful outfit, though, make sure your fashion accessories don't clash.
It all goes back to the basics of the color wheel. Primary colors, of course, are red, blue and yellow. Secondary colors are those that result from mixing two primary colors (i.e., red plus yellow equals orange).
Primary and secondary colors that are side by side on the wheel are analogous to each other. They work very well together when they are matched on the same level of lightness or darkness.
If you want to make a big fashion statement, choose primary and secondary colors that are opposite of each other on the wheel. Pairing these colors is bold and adventurous, and some shades don't look as good together as others. Avoid partnering red with green, though, unless it's the holiday season. Experiment to find which colors work best for you. In general, don't use more than three colors in your whole ensemble.
Scale
The scale of your fashion accessories is important, too. When you're
wearing patterns, simple accessories are the best option. Accessories
and jewelry that are too busy will make prints look tacky. The same goes
for ruffled, sequined, embroidered or otherwise embellished garments:
Wear understated accessories to keep the emphasis on your outfit. The scale and shape of your handbag is also important. Consider your body type in addition to what you are wearing. Tall, thin women look best with short, slouchy bags such as hobos and clutches. Petite women should avoid oversized satchels; these bags overwhelm their small frames. Short ladies should also steer clear of handbags with long straps. Plus-size and hourglass-shaped women look fabulous with medium-sized structured or boxy handbags to balance out their curves.
Style
Fashion accessories can define your style. A white shirt and jeans or
simple black dress can look completely different depending on your
choice of handbag, shoes, jewelry and other accessories. Here are some
common accessories to consider, depending on your personal style:- Classic accessories -- pearl- or diamond-stud earrings, silk scarf, leather clutch and classic black pumps
- Glamorous accessories -- chandelier earrings, bib necklace, large cocktail ring, crystal-embellished clutch, oversized sunglasses and sky-high heels
- Playful accessories -- chunky jewelry, hobo bag, headbands, skinny belt and colorful ballet flats
- Edgy accessories -- thick cuff bracelet, choker necklace, studded handbag and black leather booties
- Workday accessories -- delicate necklace, classic watch, large satchel or shoulder bag and kitten heels
- Casual accessories -- candy-colored bracelet or watch, Wayfarer sunglasses, crossbody bag, floppy hats and knee-high boots or espadrille sandals

OCCASIONS DETERMINE WHAT TO WEAR......
Defining Dress Codes – What to Wear for Every Occasion
With so many different dress codes out there, it can be difficult to know what to wear, even when the type of dress requested is stated on the invitation.
Laura Hunt, an image, fashion, and beauty consultant at Freeway Fashion, says you should always ask what to wear if you’re invited to an event with an unfamiliar dress code.“Depending on how well you know the person who sent the invitation, you can place a call to them directly,” Hunt says. “If not, there is usually a contact person listed on the invite, including a contact number. If you are not comfortable placing a phone call, you can send an email.”
Hunt and Tannya Bernadette, a wardrobe stylist and 2009 Fashion Marketing graduate from The Art Institute of Seattle, decode what to wear for the following dress codes.

ANKARA IS TAKEN OVER
The Colourful Ankara Fabric Revolutionizing International Fashion
From the streets of Lagos, to countless boardrooms, to catwalks all over the world, the Ankara fabric has proven to be so versatile that it is now recognized on the global fashion scene. A number of celebrities have been spotted in Ankara ensembles on red carpets globally. To many, the Ankara fabric has become a wardrobe staple already. The fabric is used to make a growing number of fashion items; bags, shoes, dresses, jewellery and countless accessories. This development has led to a change in the general perception of the Ankara fabric worldwide. According the article Fashion Reborn: Blends of African outfits from Ankara, by fibre2fashion “Destiny of the ‘once before’ cheap Ankara fabrics, have undergone a magical transformation. Elegant creativity of the designers has made it a preferred choice of the rich and celebrities.” The African print fabric has metamorphosed from cultural attire to a glamorous wardrobe must-have and right now the spotlight is on Africa.
This Ankara trend has impacted the West African economy in a lot of ways and thus, the Nigerian economy. In the mid- 1980s, there were around 180 functional textile mills in Nigeria. The mills employed approximately a million people, this accounted for more than 60 percent of the textile industry capacity in West Africa, empowering millions of households across all geopolitical zones of Nigeria. This however changed shortly as the sector crashed into an industrial abyss. During this period, the number of textile companies dropped from about 180 to almost zero. This was revealed by an article on Nigeria’s textile economy titled: Nigeria’s Textile Industry on a Rebound?.
However, in recent times, the sector has rebounded. The number of functioning textile companies has risen once more to 25. While the industry may not be at its former place of glory, a steady incline can be noted in the growth of the industry which is largely due to the current global Ankara trend.
The rise in the demand of the fabric which was not too long ago considered to be a fabric for the poor or restricted to cultural festivities due to its brightly coloured patterns and relative low cost, has led to a corresponding rise in the production of the material. Also, aside from the lower priced brands, a lot more textile factories have started producing the Ankara fabric in more appealing and sophisticated designs.
Furthermore, due to the ready availability of Ankara in the local market, it has become the preferred choice of fabric when making custom designed outfits. What was once considered to be a local market has grown exponentially to meet the increasing demands for the fabric worldwide. African designers and their Ankara designs are now sought out in all the echelons of the global society. The Ankara fashion industry has proven to be a veritable goldmine in these ways and many more.
A lot of Ankara fashion shows spring up daily all over the global fashion scene. One of the more noteworthy ones is the annual Ankara Festival hosted yearly in Los Angeles, California. The festival or AFLA as it is commonly known was created in 2010 with the goal of increasing the visibility of African Culture through fashion, Arts, music, dance, and food. The festival aims to showcase Modern African Designs in African Print (Ankara), established African and African inspired designers, young up and coming designers, providing them a venue to showcase their abilities, and develop their entrepreneurial ambition in the international fashion arena. Another notable development is the Ankara Invasion. This has been adopted as the collective name for the current global Ankara trend. Different items fashioned out of the Ankara fabric are now spotted in places where it was once viewed as unsuitable.
As Duro Olowu -a Nigerian fashion designer- said, “For a long time, there was a sense that this was limited to Africa but now it has become global. Combined with an awareness of social responsibility, it makes for a powerful statement.” Countless international designers have launched various new designs revolving around the Ankara fabric. Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, Eley Kishimoto, Jean Paul Gaultier, Diane Von Furstenberg, Gwen Stefani, Dries van Noten, Kenzo and Paul Smith among others have included items fashioned out of Ankara fabric in their recent collections.
A lot of renowned celebrities have also taken to this fashion trend. BeyoncĂ© Knowles, Rihanna, Fergie and Kim Kardashian to name a few, have adopted the Ankara fabric and have been spotted in daring designs using one or more fabrics. The rise on the trend isn’t restricted to celebrities alone. A lot of foreigners who have seen the designs at work, on TV or even at school have joined the movement. It is not uncommon to find people wearing the fabric who may not even know the traditional name. The fabric is commonly referred to in these circles as “African Print”.
The overnight explosion of the use of Ankara fabric on the global fashion scene is perhaps one of the most notable fashion trends to have emerged from Africa over the last couple of years. The Ankara fabric is one that is very versatile and constantly evolving to meet today’s fashion fads. Hence, one may go as far as saying that the fabric and the trend have come to stay on the global fashion market.
